In this article, you will be inform how to make the start menu for the game in Unity, the 3D game design software that is free to download. This one is such a simple menu, but all the concept can be easily applied to more complex main menus, including game title, start button, quit button with customized fonts; start and quit button change colors when hovered over; and customized background.
In order to make the start menu, please follow this following instructions. The first thing that you have to do is to make the plane and position it in front of the camera. In order to do it, firstly, open Unity and save the scene as MainMenu. Second, click Create – Plane in the Hierarchy panel. Please rename it as “Background”. Secondly, rotate the Main Camera 90 degrees downward and change its Projection from Perspective to Orthographic. Thirdly, adjust the transform of the camera so it is 8-10 units above the menu, looking straight down. Fourthly, scale the plane Background to fit the camera preview exactly.
The second thing that you have to do is to light it up. First of all, you have to add lights. You can do this by selecting Create in the Hierarchy panel and clicking Directional Light. It is not important where in 3D space the directional light is as it will provide the same lighting no matter what. Therefore, after adjusting the direction of the light to shine down on the background, you have to raise the light up 20 units or so in the Y direction in order to keep your field of vision clear in the scene view.
The third one is to add the texture. The background might be plain looking now, but you can spice it up easily enough. All that you have to do is to just take the digital camera or smartphone and take the photo of something convenient and interesting such as the floor, ceiling, walls, and so on, and upload it to the computer. Then, create the new folder named Textures in the Assets folder for the Unity project you are working on. The next thing that you have to do is to right click the folder in the Project panel in Unity and choose “Show in Explorer”. After that, copy and paste the picture you took into the Textures folder. With the Background chosen in the Hierarchy, you can click and drag the picture from the Texture folder in the Project panel to Inspector panel. It is where it should be added as the new texture for the background.
The fourth thing is to add text. The rest of the steps are going to get some fonts (that you have already), making the text change color when you hover over it, writing the script to control the buttons, and making the buttons do things. Please do every step well so there will be no mistake and you will get the best result.
